Is liposuction considered a weight loss procedure?

Liposuction is a procedure that removes fat that you can’t seem to get rid of through diet and exercise. It’s not a weight loss solution or a substitute for proper diet and exercise, but liposuction can effectively reduce stubborn, localized pockets of fat that don’t respond to these methods.

How do I prepare for liposuction surgery?

We will provide you with detailed instructions before your surgery. In general, you should arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure and have a companion available to assist you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Certain medications, including aspirin and blood thinners, will need to be paused before the procedure. Medical histories, including pre-existing conditions and current medications, are reviewed before treatment to minimize complications.

What happens during the procedure?

We will put you under general anesthesia before we begin the surgery. A small incision will be made to insert the cannula into the fat. The cannula is attached to a suction device or a syringe that extracts the fat. Liposuction is typically an outpatient surgery. Hence, you can go home the same day as your surgery.

What happens after my surgery?

Most patients can return to work in a few days and return to all regular activities such as exercise within 2 to 4 weeks or less. Recovery and aftercare vary depending on the treated area and the amount of fat removed. Lifestyle choices such as not smoking, getting enough rest and hydration affect the recovery period.

Will I experience scarring after the procedure?

Scarring from liposuction is minimal. The small, thin tube used to remove fatty tissue, called a cannula, causes minimal scars. Scars also depend upon your skin’s quality. We will discuss treatment locations and ways to minimize the appearance of scarring.

What should I do after the procedure?

You should avoid strenuous activities for at least 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. The use of compression garments anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks is also recommended to decrease bruising and swelling and help loose skin retract. We will provide you with aftercare tips and pain relief advice.

How safe is this treatment?

There are risks with any surgery, but complications are infrequent when performed by qualified and experienced doctors.

At Aaron Jeng MD MPH clinic, we make patient safety our No. 1 priority. Therefore, we continuously educate ourselves on the best practices for administering treatments and procedures to guarantee the safety and effectiveness of our services.
